Constraints

Constraints are the limits set out in the brief which you must work under. Failure to do will

result in a loss of marks!

The best way to approach this is to treat constraints under 2 headings:

  • Hard Constraints
  • Soft Constraints

Hard Constraints

Hard Constraints are those stated in the breif.

For example:

  • "All main operating features must be clearly visible without dismantling".

  • "The longest dimension must not exceed 300mm"

  • "Electric Power does not exceed 9Volts"

Soft Constraints:

Soft Constraints are not stated in the brief but they are (hidden) constraints you need to be aware of.

  • Time: find out the specific deadlines that you will need to have the project made by.

  • Cost? Calculate what the project may cost

  • Materials Availability? Investigate or ask your teacher what materials are available to you.

  • Skills and tools needed? Have you access to all the tools needed? Can you perform the skills required?
